Playa Bavaro: resorts, best places, activities and public access to the main beach of Punta Cana. However, even the beach, which is also called Bavaro Beach, is public, public access points are limited, so it's good to know how to get to Bavaro beach. Punta Cana has a total of 8 different main beaches, many of them wide and all with clean white or golden yellow sands. Several beaches are ranked among the best in the world by the European Blue Flag organization, known for its strict environmental and water quality standards.
The Dominican Republic, in general, has more blue flag beaches than any other island in the Caribbean. It is the most frequented area of all the beaches of Punta Cana because it has many large all-inclusive resorts in the front row, as well as four public access points (Bibijagua, Jellyfish, Corales and El Cortecito, see below for more details and see the Playa Bavaro article for a map with all the points public access) for all persons staying in smaller apartments or hotels in the village of Bavaro. Bavaro is the most popular beach in Punta Cana and offers an attractive selection of resorts, vacation rentals and all-inclusive beachfront hotels. Uvero Alto is a beach and resort area located at the northern end of the resort town of Punta Cana in the province of La Altagracia in the Dominican Republic.
Both are part of Playa Bavaro, but as they are the most important public access points on the beaches of Punta Cana, they deserve a separate mention. Now, before describing the different beaches, it is very important to understand the geography of the area around Punta Cana. Cabeza de Toro beach is the perfect place if you want to be surrounded by the beautiful natural forests and wildlife of Punta Cana. Another option is to simply have a beer and enjoy people watching, as Playa Macao is the favorite beach for locals in Punta Cana on weekends.
When it comes to luxury and quality, Iberostar Grand is one of the high-end options and one of the best luxury resorts in Punta Cana. When heading to Samana, it is advisable to rent a car in Punta Cana (see rental car prices and recommendations here*) and spend at least a few days on the peninsula. But once you reach the end of the hotel zone, Hard Rock Punta Cana is the last one, a long, almost endless white sand beach with turquoise water awaits you. In addition, it is a perfect beach for swimming and also the best option in Punta Cana and its surroundings for a seaweed free beach.
As described in my comprehensive snorkeling guide, Punta Cana is not the best area in the Dominican Republic or the Caribbean for extensive snorkeling. Until a few years ago it was a very small fishing village a few kilometers from Punta Cana airport. The beaches around Punta Cana are some of the best in the Caribbean and, without a doubt, the most spectacular beaches in the entire Dominican Republic. However, if you're looking for a carefree all-inclusive vacation, Punta Cana is hard to beat in the Caribbean.
